Very few things in life can make me as happy as a great Pokemon RPG, and Sword and Shield repeatedly left me in a state of pure, child-like joy. With every new game in this 23-year-old series, changes big and small are always made, but I’ve never been willing to declare the latest entry the new gold standard for Pokemon because they’ve consistently been a balance of better and worse. But the first mainline game on the Switch has changed that: though there is still no “perfect Pokemon game,” the 40-plus hours I’ve spent with Sword and Shield have left me comfortable with calling them the best Pokemon games I have ever played – and I’ve played ‘em all.

3. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!

It’s where many long-time fans had their first Pokemon adventure, and it’s the region where I met one of my favorite characters of all time. It’s with great relief that, even when I consciously remove those glasses, I find something greatly deserving of that deep admiration when I look at Pokémon: Let’s Go. After about 40 hours with the Pikachu version, I put down my Nintendo Switch impressed with how well this reimagining of Pokemon Yellow matches my memories of my first adventure, albeit with a few major differences that almost all turn out to be for the better. Similar to Pokemon Yellow before it, Pokemon: Let’s Go starts you with either a Pikachu or Eevee before the team can set out on their adventure to capture more Pokemon, collect the region’s eight gym badges, and defeat the Pokemon League Elite Four. The opening scene with either Pikachu or Eevee is adorable, and I love how different turns in the story acknowledge that this is not the first adventure set in Kanto.

4. Pokkén Tournament DX

Pokkén Tournament takes a lot of what we know from old fighting gaming favorites and sticks them into a blender, delivering a unique take on both Pokémon and on fighting games in general. Sometimes all those ingredients spill over a container that’s a little too full – there is a surprising amount to learn beyond the beginner’s level, and that may alienate some Pokémon fans without fighting game experience. Pokkén Tournament does do a good job, though, at alleviating this bloat of mechanics with single-player modes to help ease into the action.

5. Pokémon Snap

Pokémon Snap, because I probably looked and sounded like a total dingus. Without fail, each time I played a new course a Pokémon would appear out of nowhere, or do something cute, or react to something I did in a surprising way, and I (this is not an exaggeration) would sit up on the couch, point at the screen, and go in delight. I love the way The Pokémon Company has, in recent years, begun letting more companies outside Game Freak (think Niantic with Pokémon Go, or Legendary Pictures with Detective Pikachu) make media that shows off Pokémon not as collectibles or as static RPG party members but as lovable, intelligent creatures. After successfully digging into their combat prowess in Pokken Tournament, Bandai Namco has been handed the far more peaceful reigns of an on-rails nature photography game and charged with portraying Pokémon as wild creatures in living ecosystems to be observed, befriended, and only captured via camera. Given the timbre of my happy yells every time a Wooper said Woooh! at me, if my neighbors had known what I was doing they’d probably agree that New Pokémon Snap is a delightful success on this front.
